Follow Jesus.

What does it mean to follow Jesus?

WHY ARE WE HERE?

The Bible tells us very clearly that we were put on this earth for two reasons:
1. God made us to love us.
2. God made us to enjoy a personal relationship with Him.

Ephesians 1:4-5 "Even before the world was made; God had already chosen us to be His through our union with Christ because of His love. God had already decided that through Jesus Christ He would make us His children. This was God's pleasure and purpose."
1 Timothy 6:17 "God richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment."
John 10:10 "I have come in order that you might have life, life in all its fullness."

THE PROBLEM: SIN

We have a natural desire to be in control and to ignore God's principles for living. And it’s a really sad thing - sin breaks our friendship with God. All sin requires a payment in order to be reconciled with God. It’s a payment too big for any of us to pay on our own.

Isaiah 59:2 "The trouble is that your sins have cut you off from God."
Romans 3:23 "All have sinned and fall short of God's glorious ideal."
Romans 6:23 "The wages of sin is death…”

THE SOLUTION: JESUS

God had a plan all along to restore our friendship with Him. Jesus Christ, the very Son of God, became God in the flesh, walked this earth as one of us, and gave up his life as the sacrificial payment so our sins could be forgiven.

Romans 6:23 "The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."

The good news is that the story didn’t end in death! Three days after Jesus died, he was raised back to life - proving to the world that He has put away our sin for good, and conquered death, so we don’t have to die for our sin, but can live. Now we have direct access to a restored friendship with God! That access is only through faith in Jesus.

John 14:6 [Jesus said] “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father, except through Me."

How do I follow Jesus?

  • Admit that God has not been first place in your life and ask Him to forgive your sins.

1 John 1:9, "If we confess our sins He's faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from every wrong."

  • Believe that Jesus Christ died to pay for your sins and that He rose again and is alive today.

Romans 10:9, "If you confess that Jesus is your Lord, and you believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."

  • Accept God's free gift of salvation.

Ephesians 2:8-9, "It is by grace you are saved through faith and it is not of yourselves. It is the gift of God. Not of works so no one could boast."

  • Invite God to take the reins and become the one calling the shots in your life.

You can follow these steps by saying a simple prayer like this:

"Dear God, Thank you for making me and loving me even when I've ignored You and gone my own way. I realize I need You in my life and I'm sorry for my sins. I ask You to forgive me. Thank You for sending your Son Jesus to die on the cross for me. Please help me to better understand the significance of His sacrifice. As much as I know how, I want to follow You from now on. Please come into my life and make me a new person from the inside. I accept Your gift of salvation. Help me to grow to know you more and to live a life that brings you honor. Amen.”
